For over 37 years, I have felt extremely privileged to have had such a warm and close relationship with my in-laws, Jane and Evan. In addition to creating an amazing life-partner for me, we have experienced life’s incredible highs and unimaginable lows together. We share similar passions: reading, politics, family, social justice, and the arts.
(For those interested, here’s a partial list of the passions we don’t share: University of Wisconsin women’s volleyball, sparkly Bucky Badger paraphernalia and jewelry, rising University of Wisconsin junior varsity hockey stars, the new addition on the engineering building at the University of Wisconsin, and the fabulous incoming inventory at Burnie’s rock shop in downtown Madison).
With his sweet voice and gentle demeanor, Evan is a source of positive energy and stamina, having faced and overcome countless health obstacles. I truly appreciate his worldly outlook and intellect. When it comes to personal and life issues, I welcome no one’s counsel more than Jane’s. She listens, responds, shares, and relates to every situation, no matter the gravity. Most of all, Jane is a strong person who can handle my needling when I dish it out.
Except for the time they took us on a winter family vacation to the Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Waterpark (hereinafter “hell on earth”), I have truly savored our time together. We have laughed, cried, shared, comforted, challenged, and enjoyed our years together beyond measure. Our relationship has been one of my life's most unexpected gifts.
But when it comes to real estate, I keep them at bay. Whenever we have bought or sold either our residences or investment properties, Jane and Evan find out after-the-fact. Invariably, they are impressed by the course we took and our savvy, recognizing they would never have done so or advised it.
And you should do the same with your in-laws.
That’s because you don’t need your in-laws to tell you that the price of your powder room will buy you 20 acres of land on the outskirts of Wauwatosa. You don’t need your in-laws to tell you that your future is doomed if you have a gabled roof. You don’t need your in-laws to tell you that you’re a criminal for wisely considering painting the wood. You don’t need your in-laws to yap at the inspector, criticize the counter-top upgrade, balk at the seller’s profit, and relay horror stories about their community’s board of directors who are divided about whether to re-pave the golf cart roads.
To keep your own sanity, just keep your in-laws out of it. And never EVER let them take you and the kids for a “fun” vacation to an indoor water park.

Dyeing of the Chicago River
|
A tradition since 1962, representatives of the Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 pour dye into the Chicago River on the morning of the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade, turning the water a bright shade of green. The dye is vegetable-based, so the river typically reverts to its usual murky shade by the end of the weekend. The Chicago River dyeing takes place between Columbus Drive and State Street, so head to the Michigan Avenue bridge or snag a spot along the Riverwalk for the best views of the action.

Chicago Botanic Garden:
The Orchid Show of Wonders
|
Need a break from the monotonous sights of winter in Chicago? Head to the North Shore for the Chicago Botanic Garden's annual orchid show, where there are more than 10,000 vibrant blooms on display to brighten your day. This year's show is inspired by carnival and circus attractions—you'll walk under Ferris wheel seats and marvel at unicycles on tightropes while listening to classic circus tunes. Swing by on Saturdays and Sundays to shop for orchids of your own in a pop-up marketplace, or stay late on selected Thursday and Friday nights to have a cocktail and funnel cake during Orchids After Hours.
