Putting Olive Garden aside for the moment, I think we can all agree that one of the city’s best restaurants is Avec. A regular for years after it first opened on Randolph, I enjoyed its perfectly curated menu and drinks. But even more tellingly, I felt super cool there: the intimate boisterous space filled with shared tables with backless benches, gorgeous hipster patrons, and endless opportunities to chat - and even share - with the strangers seated next to you. With no reservations, we had to wait and wait and wait for a table.
It was worth it.
Then a few years ago Avec opened another location on LaSalle, away from the sexiness and swagger of Randolph. A huge space with really nothing distinctive (think fern bars like Fuddruckers from the 70’s), the LaSalle locale offers the same food and drinks as Randolph - equally delicious and mouth-watering.
But frankly, let’s face it: it’s not cool. The LaSalle chairs are comfortable, the noise level is tolerable, and you can - yikes - make a reservation. For some trendsters, an absolutely horrific combination they would go to great lengths to avoid.
It’s not easy for me to admit this, but between Randolph and LaSalle, I now choose the 70’s fern bar, hands down.
Whether the times have changed or me, I’m finding it’s really nice to hear what others at the table are saying, to respond without screaming, and to enjoy an evening out sitting with the comfort of a chair with a - gulp - back on it. (Remember, I have conditions).
This all was cemented in my mind when I returned to Randolph Avec a few weeks ago with dear friends - all exceptionally accomplished and engaging folks who may have been talking about something interesting at the table (I will never know!).
Our homes, too, serve different needs at various points in our lives - whether raising kids, entertaining for 100’s, or decorating like it’s a Home and Garden showplace to showcase. Our needs, priorities, and preferences change over time.
Might it be time to think about downsizing, upsizing, or just changesizing? We can help you explore your options to make sure where you live reflects exactly where you are in your life’s journey - no matter where or what that is.
Even if that involves hanging ferns in your new place.
Have a great weekend and Father’s Day!
Best,
Brad
