After we send out our weekly Friday “Into the Weekends,” I often get responses with a comment on my message, a question about one of our listings, or an invitation to a very fabulous and exclusive A-list party (sorry, but I can’t make them all!).
But two weeks ago we defied convention and tradition, and did the unthinkable - and I’m still getting flack for it: we sent out “Into the Weekend” on a Thursday night. And readers were not happy. You would have thought I divulged the surprise ending for “White Lotus.”
Folks, here’s the deal: this is MY e-blast and we can send it out whenever and however we want. We can skip a week, we can change the format, we can even send it in the real mail if we like (oy, I know). We get to choose which events looks interesting around town, we get to highlight OUR OWN (amazing!) listings, and we can - wait for this - change the font on a whim if we’re in the mood.
So, you can breathe easily this week; you’ll be getting the regular format on the regular day. No curveballs.
Just because I wanted to. Enjoy!

“Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins”
|
Hershel of Ostropol, the folkloric Jewish trickster, must defend the old town synagogue from goblins as Hanukkah approaches in this stage adaptation of Eric Kimmel's 1989 children's book. Strawdog Theater's musical touches and silliness make it perfect for kids—and best of all, it’s free to attend so long as you make a reservation ahead of time. Note that all audience members over the age of 2 are required to wear masks, and audience members over the age of 5 must provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination or negative PCR test to enter the theater.
|
Ever since 1976, Chicagoans have gathered during the holiday season to belt out Handel’s classic oratorio (the one with the famous “Hallelujah!” chorus) backed by a volunteer orchestra and professional soloists. Tickets are free, though reservations will be required, and make sure to show up to the event familiar with the score—and you might also want to figure out if you're a soprano, alto, tenor or bass. Better hurry: this event sells out!
