For over 35 years, my dear friend and I have enjoyed an almost-weekly breakfast at our favorite city haunt. Even though our regular server retired during the pandemic, our ordering has remained fairly consistent, with only minor variations. With all the craziness going on in life and in the world, this tradition has served as a valuable constant in my life - a source of mutual comfort, counsel, and peace.
Well all of that changed this morning when we sat down in the outdoor dining area and were bombarded by swarms of bees who were attracted to either the syrup on his pancakes, the jam on my toast…or, possibly even, um, my inherent sweetness.
Needless to say, it quickly became a very unpleasant experience requiring an immediate change of course. So we asked to do the unthinkable: move inside where a majority of the tables were unoccupied (and bee-free, of course). When we requested the about-face, the host (a newbie) insisted that we stay at the bee-infested outdoor table because the indoor table was not part of our server’s station.
As a former (prized - decorated, even) restaurant server from decades ago, I think I earned the standing to insist we stay inside where it was clearly more comfortable, regardless of the server’s station. In my experience, server stations can be altered, exchanged, or recalibrated when circumstances warrant.
Same thing with a home search. When we start working with our buyers, we review their parameters and priorities: price, location, bed/bath count, parking, amenities, type of home, style … really anything and everything. But during the course of our search, things may change: your job situation, financial standing, family size, the school selection, location preferences, or even whether you absolutely need a built-in espresso machine and central vacuuming system.
The point is this: you can count on us to pivot. No matter how many places we’ve seen together or how invested we are in the search, my team and I will gladly pivot if either external changes make the initial checklist untenable - or if you just wake up one day in a mood and feel like a different kind of place. Hey, all cool by us.
Just don’t ask us to take you out for pancakes.
