Assisting my clients in prepping their homes for sale is sometimes a joy - and sometimes not. A lot of people don’t want to hear that it’s time to throw out their fraternity paddles; finally give away the ugly dishes they inherited from their great grandmother’s cousin; and paint over the (exhausted?) dancing fairies still lingering on their daughter’s bedroom walls. These are hard truths, and it always falls on my shoulders to give it to you straight.
But there’s always one aspect of a house which I struggle with: plants. I really don’t get them. I’m not sure what they’re doing there, how they add any joy to our lives, why people pay money for them, how they’re taken care of, and why they’re allowed to thrive and outlive us all.
In a listing appointment this week, I toured a house which I think was gorgeous; but I couldn’t really see it behind the vines snaking around the windows, over the cupboards, in and out of the banisters, and even creeping into the shower. Scary stuff. When I hinted that we may have to do something with these plants to make the house show-ready, you would have thought that I was insisting the sellers send their first-born son to North Dakota or somewhere.
The fondness many of my clients have for their plants often puts us at odds - especially when I suggest they shove them in the basement closet or in the dumpster in the alley. The good thing is that I do have members of my team (and in my household) who actually have and like plants - and together we figure out where to put them and how to make your house shine.
Just know that if I can tackle the plant dilemma, there is no hurdle we can’t face in getting your house ready for market.
