If you were to walk into my house today, this is what you would find on my fireplace mantle: a photo of my son Jack-Jack wearing a huge mask he made in 3rd grade; a matchbox with the presidential seal and Barack Obama’s signature on top of two white White House cocktail napkins; dual ceramic bud vases; three paintings by outside artists from my late friend Chickie Alter’s house; a porcelain figurine playing the recorder; a photo of my late mother with her beaded armband resting on the corner of the frame; two bud vases with thorns; a carved stone swan; a Xerox copy of a portrait I drew of my sister Deena when I was six years old (she has the original); a ceramic face of a clown Jack-Jack made on its side; a velvet painting of a pink poodle (artist unknown); two lighters for the fireplace; and the shofar the Blocks gave my son, Max, for his Bar Mitzvah.
And if I were putting my house on the market today, this is what you would find on my fireplace mantle: dual ceramic bud vases. Maybe.
So, when I’m getting your home ready to sell, don’t get mad at me when I instruct you to take down personal pictures, move things around a bit, and fluff it up to showing condition. I know what buyers want to see when they walk into your home to see if they can make it their own.
And trust me: it may not include the mementos and tchotchkes which have so much meaning to you.

Celebrate Mothers Day with a WOMANISH art exhibit
|
Showcasing the work of female and gender non-confirming artists, the WOMANISH pop-up is a five-story exhibit made up of multiple rooms and installations that explore womanhood from various perspectives. Visitors will be able to visit a recreation of a 1950’s-era diner, view a collage of vintage advertisements with women of color added to them and snap photos of a floral display. The pop-up has been modified with a new set of safety procedures, including capacity restrictions and plenty of hand sanitizer stations.

Why not start Mothers Day with a mimosa? Taste a variety of mimosas, screwdrivers and palomas on the Chicago Riverwalk while k
icking back and enjoying the chill vibes of Island Party Hut, which
provides a lively tiki-style environment that will give you that relaxed "by the beach" feeling. Add the fun of the Riverwalk and you've got yourself the perfect start to your day. It's time to get out of the house and safely have some fun with family and friends again.
