When my team and I work with our buyers, we always aim to respect their price point. But without fail, every buyer wishes they could be in the next price-point up. A $200k buyer dreams about what they could buy for $400k. A $1 million buyer wants to be a $2m buyer. And a $5 million buyer is pissed because they crave what only an $8 million home can provide.
Which reminds me of a story curiously appropriate for this holiday weekend.
Every Memorial Day, my family had a fun tradition: to go camping with one of our closest family friends. Each family would rent their own camper and we’d caravan out to different sites in Michigan and Wisconsin for cook-outs, swimming, hiking, and other camping stuff.
The first year of this tradition, my family rented the most basic - and cheapest - Winnebago. We all squeezed in with my sister and me sleeping in the space above the driver’s seat, my brothers on the table that turned into a “bed,” and my parents on the extended sofa.
The Simons rented the GMC, a deluxe camper with so many more amenities and comfortable sleeping configurations.
My clearest recollections of that first camping trip center on the mishaps of the dud Winnebago: the cassette tape player spewing the Barry Manilow tape all over the dashboard and floor; the electric battery failing, forcing my mother to pop her popcorn at a gas station; and the truly unfortunate messes when we unsuccessfully tried to dump the waste.
The next year we decided to up our game and splurge by renting the same model GMC the Simons had rented the first year. But then they drove up in an even more deluxe top-of-the-line TSV-4 GMC model with a Cuisinart and microwave.
And when we rented the TSV-4 the next year, the Simons drove up in the coolest camper ever - the FMC, a kick-ass camper with a huge color TV owned by celebrities like James Brolin, Clint Eastwood, and Carol Burnett.
In retrospect, we should have been content with our basic model Winnebago. It largely did what it was supposed to do (mishaps and all) within our budget.
I believe the same is true with your house search: No matter your price point, we will find a home that works for you.
Even if it’s not a mansion suitable for Carol Burnett. Or the Simons.
Have a great holiday weekend!
