If you’re smart, you’ll stay far away from my house on Tuesday. That’s because in addition to negotiating multi-million dollar deals and refereeing cut-throat bidding wars (another day in the life), I’ll be honoring a tradition I use to share with my mother: grinding and seasoning 15 lbs. of fish; preparing a broth out of - don’t ask; shaping the fish into oblong dumplings; and dropping them into the simmering broth for a few hours…from where they will emerge as the most delicious gefilte fish on the planet.
Putting aside the grueling and (very) smelly process, the outcome is worth it - not only because the fish tastes so good; but, more importantly, because it rekindles loving memories of making the gefilte fish with my mother in her kitchen. Over fish, we laughed, we cried, we told stories, we reminisced, and we shared our dreams for the future.
Although so many of those dreams were never realized for my mother, this holiday tradition reminds me of the value of creating lasting and magical memories in your home.
No matter where you live or what you celebrate (and even if you observe nothing at all), I hope that the days and weeks ahead in this new season brings you the opportunity to take stock (literally and figuratively) in your own lives, tell the stories which bring meaning to you, and cherish the time spent with loved ones in your home.
