When I was 10, my parents sent me to my first sleep-away summer camp, Camp Echo in Michigan. Aside from our daily affirmations (yes, believe it) in the outdoor chapel (it was run by the YMCA), I remember almost liking archery, the staff forcing me to swim in the freezing lake, and being picked last for every softball game.
The good thing is that I've had many wonderful experiences in my life since I was 10.
However, the highlight of that summer occurred on the last night when the entire camp gathered for its end-of-the-summer awards ceremony. Confident that no award would be distributed to me, I sat in the back and watched as kids were called for their awards: fastest runner, best diver, most baskets scored. The evening stretched on as the star kids approached the podium to accept their awards.
Then - I almost even missed it - they announced the award for…drum roll… “Best Waiter.” And my name was called. MY NAME WAS CALLED!!! As one of our rotating chores, it never dawned on me that waiting tables was award-worthy - or that I could ever stand out from the pack doing it. But here we were. In disbelief, I rose and approached the podium to the wild applause and cheers of the other campers and staff.
Accepting that paper certificate with my name on it as I was coronated as Camp Echo’s best waiter decades ago remains one of my life's most cherished moments.
When the Chicago Association of Realtors (again) gave me and my team its highest award last week - the platinum for the highest volume and most transactions in 2022, it came as no surprise. I am continuously amazed at what my team is able to accomplish. A small yet mighty force, we go the extra mile to ensure that each client and transaction is treated with the highest level of care and advocacy.
Still, in my heart, this award is second only to Best Waiter at Camp Echo.
