One day when I was 12 years old, I boarded the public bus in Glencoe to get to my weekly piano lesson. After a few stops, a group of older kids hopped on and entrenched themselves in the back two rows, howling and yacking it up. It didn’t take long for a strong and weird odor to start permeating the bus, causing the rest of the passengers and me (and the bus driver?) some awkward discomfort. Using the awesome power of deduction, I soon realized that this distinctive odor was pot.
Over the years, I admit I became more acclimated to the smell; but nothing will ever compare to the onslaught which overcame me on that bus.
Well, almost nothing. In the midst of a packed tour of luxury downtown cooperatives with my out-of-town buyers last week, we arrived at our scheduled appointment in an elegant building on Lake Shore Drive. The listing agent met us in the lobby, took us up, and opened the door to an enormous 4500 square foot apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.
When we entered the apartment, my clients and I almost keeled over, inhaling the intense fumes of freshly smoked cannabis. To say the least, the overpowering stench was, um, distracting. And as someone who waits until 7pm to have even a glass of wine, I was not prepared to get even slightly buzzed from the residual smoke at a mid-day showing.
The agent apologized for her sellers’ lack of consideration - and when our tour concluded for the day, it was hard to remember anything about the apartment except its smell. Dude!
Which brings me to this week’s lesson for my sellers (as if I should have to say it):
Don’t smoke pot in your home before a showing. If you absolutely MUST get high, my full-service team and I can run to the dispensary and get you some delightful odor-free yet tasty gummies for your pleasure.
On that note, have a great holiday weekend!
