To all who celebrate and observe Rosh Hashanah, I wish you a happy and sweet new year. And to all who neither celebrate nor observe Rosh Hashanah, I wish you a happy and sweet new year.
And to all those who live in pre-war buildings, duplex-down’s, modern estates, and charming vintage walk-ups, I wish you a happy and sweet new year.
I wish a happy and sweet new year to all of those in new construction, grand turn-of-the-century Victorian houses, cute studios, mid-century townhouses, sprawling coops, modest 2-flats with income that helps pay your mortgage, and glamorous high-rises (even in the less desirable tiers!).
I wish you a sweet and happy new year if your place still has window air conditioning units (which you should probably take out now and put in your storage locker for the winter).
I wish you a happy and sweet new year whether or not your building has 24-hour door staff, an indoor pool, a party room with a view, a party room in the basement, really any party room, a fire pit on the common roof deck, or on-site management.
I hope your year is sweet and happy whether your monthly assessment is $300 or $3000- and whether or not it includes heat, cooking gas, or scavenger removal (even if it doesn’t separate out recycling).
To all those in Downtown, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Bucktown and Wicker Park, Rogers Park, Logan Square, Pilsen, Hyde Park, West Loop and South Loop, Any Loop, the North Shore, really any of the City’s neighborhoods, and even in the western suburbs: I wish you all a happy and sweet new year. I wish you a sweet and happy new year if you live in Kenosha or Rockford. And even in the outskirts of Kenosha or Rockford.
There are really only two groups of people I don’t wish a sweet a happy new year to: 1) those who go through the day with their Airpods on, oblivious to everyone and everything around them; and 2) those willing to ignore that our democracy is in jeopardy with the upcoming election.
L’Shana Tova ("Happy New Year") to (almost) all!
