Although - as you must certainly know- I'm usually, um, the last person to tout my accomplishments, this weekend is an exception with Sunday’s Chicago Marathon. After a year of grueling physical training (with the best coach ever!!), hours and hours of intense mind focusing, and unfathomable sacrifice and support from my family and friends (thank you, everyone!!), I am now ready to cheer on the runners at the Chicago Marathon.
With our house landlocked in the route - runners go past one side of the block and circle back on the other, we have no choice but to wake up early, face our fears, and go out to support the participants in the run. Usually, I bring my dog Astro (on a leash, of course) and hold a cup of coffee. This, in of itself, is no easy task; I have to make sure that Astro stays on leash and that I don’t spill my coffee! Not fun!
But then add cheering the runners on. It takes a lot of focus and stamina to scream encouragement from the sidelines. With my sister Deena and brother-in-law Keith (among many others I know) making a much-anticipated return engagement as marathoners, I have the added task of tracking their run and making sure we are there cheering: “Go Deena! Go Keith! You’re doing great!” And this year - with the training under my belt - I’ve decided to add: “Keep it up! Looking good! You’ve got this!!”
The Chicago Marathon has proven to be one of Chicago’s most treasured and glorious events, and I can’t wait to participate in my own special way - and I hope you will too. Just make sure that it includes finding and cheering on Deena and Keith and everyone else.
