This past week, Yoni and I (well, mostly Yoni) (ok, just Yoni) moved our son, Max, into his apartment in Hyde Park - a small efficiency, his first place all to himself. After first deciding to take a gap quarter during his final year at University of Chicago, he ultimately switched gears; he enrolled in courses and found this rental studio in an old walk-up building on 53rd Street literally the day classes began.

With a 9’x15’ footprint, the apartment is almost as big as the primary closet in the homes of many of my clients. But it has a small kitchen with a 4-burner stove, a sink, and a tiny but cool red refrigerator. It has a window air conditioner. It has a window. It has a bathroom with running water. Not much, to be sure, but Max could not be more excited.
|
And I couldn’t either. The apartment is eerily almost identical to my first apartment, a studio in Lincoln Park I subleased the summer after my Junior year of college while I interned downtown. For $185/month, it had the same floor plan and amenities (or lack thereof). Max's joy and excitement with his new place reminded me of my own elation so many years ago.
Although I have lived in some really fun and fabulous places over the years, the memories of my first apartment warms my heart and reminds me of what home is all about. When you close the front door to the outside world, it’s your sanctuary, your free space, your home.
No matter where or what lies ahead for Max, I do know that he will always cherish his first place and the comfort and peace with your own home.
Have a great weekend! I know Max will.

Bank of America Chicago Marathon
|
This Sunday is the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, meaning 45,000 runners hit the streets of Chicago and take a 26.2 mile tour of the city by foot. As verified by Time Out Chicago, while it's too late to enter the race (and complete weeks of grueling training), you can join tens of thousands of spectators on the city's streets to cheer on participants as they make their way through the course. The start and finish line in Grant Park isn't open to the public, but you can head to neighborhoods like Pilsen, Chinatown, Boystown and Lincoln Park to join crowds of onlookers toting handmade signs, blaring music and encouraging the runners as they whiz by, or meet your runner at the reunite area of Grant Park starting at 9:30am. FYI: It's going to be hot so be prepared, and face masks are recommended for both the reunite area of Grant Park and along the marathon route.

Lyric Opera of Chicago's Macbeth
|
The Lyric Opera kicks of its 2021/22 season with Giuseppe Verdi's operatic adaptation of Shakespear's Macbeth (a.k.a. the Scottish play). Appropriately, there's a Scottish director (Sir David McVicar) in charge of this new production, which also marks the debut of the Lyric's new musical director Enrique Mazzola. The three-hour show tells the tragic tale of the titular Scottish king's rise to power, as well as the bloody consequences of his ascent to the throne. Keep an eye out for Berwyn-born soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, who takes on the role of Lady Macbeth.
