Although I rarely watch the local news, there is one day a year which I can’t miss: the day after Thanksgiving when the crazy lunatic throngs of sales shoppers who have been freezing in line all night outside of their favorite stores are filmed shoving, pushing and hoarding their way through the stores to purchase toys, electronics, and clothing as holiday gifts at significantly reduced prices.
My post-Thanksgiving custom is to cozy up on my couch with leftover turkey stuffing and switch between channels 2, 5, 7 and 9 to witness the various angles and plays captured on TV of this distinctly American ritual. It’s great sport.

Chicago is the birthplace of the Lite Brite, Radio Flyer Wagons, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, Lincoln Logs (invented by Frank Lloyd Wright's second son John!) and Beanie Babies, so it's not surprising that the city has its own toy and game fair. The two-day event welcomes kids and their parents to test some of the latest toys while taking in events like a Cow Pie Catapults tournament, a fashion show and a young inventor challenge. Importantly, there will also be a beer and board game garden for adults.

Stephen Sondheim's 'Company'

Per Steve Oxman of the Chicago SunTimes, this new production of 'Company', with its gender flip and terrific star, make Sondheim’s classic better than ever.
A deeply satisfying, revelatory revival on so many levels, director Marianne Elliott’s Tony Award-winning production of the marriage-contemplating musical “Company” — now making an early stop in Chicago on a new tour — freshens a 50-year-old show to the point that many have claimed that this is the best version yet.
The headline is that the lead character changes from male Bobby to female Bobbie. Sondheim contributed to the tweaks, fully recognizing the benefits of a new perspective on a show first produced in 1970. The gender swap works so well that it solves what has always been the show’s major weakness, a central character without much personality, a likable but shallow bachelor primarily present to spur judgments on and from the swirl of married friends around him. Part of Broadway in Chicago at the Cadillac Palace Theater through November 12.
