It’s never a fun experience. But when the time comes, we all step up to the plate: we prep for a few miserable days and then go in for our routine colonoscopy. It’s something we do because our doctor tells us to do it - and it’s an easy(?!!) procedure which can detect really bad stuff early on if there’s an issue.
Same thing with a sewer scope (no, not on your body, silly). A few years ago, I was in disbelief when my seller/client was pointing out the many attributes of her renovated Lincoln Square vintage home. The house was obviously impeccably-maintained; but, she took particular pride in the fact that she had her sewer scoped every year and religiously cleared out any roots or other intrusions which might impact drainage from the house to the city sewer below the street.
As someone who has seen it all in real estate, this was a first for me. And, truthfully, at the time I thought it was a bit of overkill. But not now.
In four transactions in the last six months uninhibited crazy tree roots - OF ALL THINGS - have been the main issue impeding the smooth and orderly progression of those deals. In most cases, the seller is completely unaware that tree roots have started taking over their lines to the sewer. But all is revealed when the buyer’s inspector does a sewer scope. And then all has to be resolved - which, fortunately, we did.
So take it from me, your personal concierge real estate doctor, here with a fervent public interest announcement: act preventatively and get your sewers scoped. It’s even less uncomfortable than a colonoscopy.
Have a great weekend!
Best,
Brad
