Here’s a quick question for my loyal readers: do you live in an Edwardian house? I bet your quick response is: “huh?”- and possibly “wtf.” These were my answers last week when I began working with new clients relocating from the Bay area whose first priority was to find them the perfect Edwardian house in Chicago.
Although I truly enjoy working with clients new to Chicago, one of the challenges is to translate the real estate terms, descriptions, and practices which they’re accustomed to in their motherland. And, it goes both ways - words have different meanings and carry different weight in Chicago. Often transplants look puzzled and in need of high doses of medication if I mention “duplex-up” or “duplex-down.”
Describing a condo merely situated on the top floor of a building, Chicago real estate agents freely wield the term “penthouse,” creating wildly false expectations for my New York buyers who envision a much more glamorous product - something like Uncle Bill’s apartment in “Family Affair.”
A “townhouse” in the heart of Brooklyn is more like a Chicago “row house” than a townhouse with a shared courtyard and driveway.
The good thing is that kind-hearted people will share my pleasure and relish the opportunity to learn a new lexicon. A quick google search of Edwardian homes shed some light on what my new buyers had in mind, and we have narrowed their search to two charming “vintage” houses in Lincoln Park... one of which kind of/sort of had some Edwardian influences.

Día de Muertos at the
National Museum of Mexican Art
|
This year's Día de Muertos at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen pays tribute to and remembers the numerous individuals from Mexico and the U.S. who in the past two years have died from COVID-19. During the pandemic, many of us were heartbroken to be unable to spend time with our loved ones. As we are now able to gather, we join together to grieve and remember the ones we lost during these two years. The collective act of mourning is a fundamental aspect of annual Day of the Dead commemorations, and offers a healing way to acknowledge, accept and bear the inevitable. At this year's Day of the Dead exhibition - the 35th annual lasting now through December 12th - attendees will see new artistic expressions by local artists and site-specific installations created by artists from both sides of the US-Mexico border.
