My grandfather, Zaidee Irv, liked Standard Oil, tolerated Mobil, and hated Texaco. But Shell stood out as his absolute favorite gas. All these years later, I still can’t appreciate the difference among them - or why he felt so strongly in his preferences. As a kid, my favorite gas was pumped from the stations which gave out the best free toys - and the clear winner in my mind was Arco. Over time, I was able to collect not only all the sets animals, but also the Noah figurine AND the Arc.
As much as I like (most) (no, many) kids and appreciate their points of view, their opinions should not drive the decisions we adults need to make, whether at the gas pump or in a home purchase.
Oblivious to economic realities, investment portfolios, and practical and design preferences, kids will always go with the home that suits their immediate fancy - either because they like the color on the walls, the air hockey table in the basement, or the cool cat door in the closet where the litter box is.
So here is my simple and loving request: DON’T LET YOUR KIDS DECIDE WHICH HOUSE TO BUY. Choose the home which YOU feel adequately balances the priorities in your life. And, I’m happy to help you figure that out. Provided you leave the kids with the sitter.

The possibility of bringing extinct animal species back from the dead has been a staple of the science-fiction genre for decades. With modern advances in science, we are closer than ever to de-extinction becoming a real prospect. Could extinct species, like mammoths and passenger pigeons, be brought back to life? National Geographic Emerging Explorer Dr. Beth Shapiro is one of the scientists investigating this intriguing possibility.
A pioneer in ancient DNA research, Shapiro travels extensively through the Arctic regions of Siberia and North America to collect the bones, teeth, and other remains of Ice Age giants like mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and giant camels. She extracts DNA from these remains and uses this information to understand how changing climates and increasing human activity have shaped the present-day distribution of species. During this National Geographic Live presentation, Shapiro will explore the technical challenges, ethical considerations, and potential benefits of the astonishing and controversial science of de-extinction.

Harry Detry's Ethereal Masks
|
African masks have traditionally been carved in wood or sculpted in stone and imbued with cultural and spiritual significance. But in the works now on exhibit at at The Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in Hyde Park, Harry Detry has given the masks a more ethereal quality by making them out of construction paper. The attention to detail and authenticity with which they are made ensure that the masks retain their cultural and spiritual weight.
Detry is a visual and performing artist that has been sharing his love of art for more than 50 years. Self-taught, his research has taken him around the world gathering inspiration that he infuses into different styles of artwork. Masks are for sale at this free exhibition.
