Sometimes you just have to listen to me. You don’t have to take my restaurant recommendations, parenting advice, or even my go-to decorating color choices.
But you MUST listen to me when it comes to residential real estate, especially the contract review process. In contrast to most legal documents you will encounter in both business and personal matters, a residential real estate contract is signed by the parties BEFORE it's handed to the attorneys to review and negotiate with the other side.
As an attorney who practiced commercial real estate law prior to selling properties, I totally appreciate an attorney’s instinct to review a contract with a thick red pen, marking it up to the point of illegibility. It’s in the DNA of experienced well-trained attorneys committed to protecting their clients’ interests.
But if that’s done prior to submitting an offer (or accepting a contract, if you’re a seller), the deal will never get done. That’s because real estate agents are prohibited from making anything but minor changes to a form contract.
So, listen to me. Assuming the business terms are acceptable, sign the contract. Your trusted attorney will have the opportunity to review and recommend legal changes to the contract during the attorney review period (typically 5-7 business days after the contract is signed).
And you’ll get extra points if you go with Benjamin Moore’s Pale Oak, Halo, and Manchester Tan.

Check out Chicago's new music venue: The Salt Shed
|
Chicago is gaining a new music venue this summer, run by the same folks behind the Empty Bottle, Thalia Hall, Beauty Bar, the Promontory and SPACE in Evanston. Dubbed The Salt Shed, the entertainment complex is housed within the Morton Salt building, which has long greeted passing drivers on the Kennedy with a rooftop mural depicting the iconic Morton Salt girl. With the ability to present both indoor and outdoor concerts by the Chicago River, the Salt Shed will host some of its first ticketed shows this summer,
violinist Andrew Bird with Iron & Wine (Aug 12). A portion of the proceeds from outdoor concerts this summer will benefit the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and Friends of the Chicago River.

Ever wish you could go back in time? Well here’s your chance! Referred to by Patch as a “Generation X haven”, Chicagoans looking for a blast from the past don’t need to look further than the 25th annual Retro on Roscoe festival.
Three stages will be spread amongst an eminent six-block stretch in Chicago’s favorite Roscoe Village. Live music will play oldies and throwbacks along with popular hits to keep festival goers moving through the hot summer nights!
The beautiful tree-lined streets of Roscoe Village will set the scene for artisans, antique vendors and cool merchants in an offbeat shopping atmosphere that is second to none. Roscoe Village’s top restaurants will also serve up much-desired summer treats that will keep the whole family pleased.
