If you walked into almost any home on the North Shore in 1980’s, there is a high likelihood that you would see a tapestry by artist Calman Shemi hanging on one of the walls (and an even higher likelihood that it would be hanging near a Lucite coffee table with a vase of colorful freshly beaded flowers in it). Although some make take issue with this assessment, I think Shemi’s popularity (genius?) was because of the colors he applied in his abstract designs; they perfectly matched the yummy pastels used in home design at the time: seafoam green, teal, salmon, peach, fuchsia, pale yellow - and a wide array of delicate mauves, of course.
Even though Shemis still shine in some of the Shore’s finest residences, his popularity came to mind when one of my clients asked me to help decide between a couple of paintings she was thinking about purchasing to hang over her fireplace. She wanted to know which would “go” best with the furniture already in the living room.
One of the things I love best about my relationships with my clients is that they frequently ask for my design advice - both before and after they purchase their homes. And I’m always happy to give my honest opinion. But I firmly believe that the acquisition of art shouldn’t be a design choice. It shouldn’t matter if it matches the tassels on your drapes, the fabric on your ottoman, or the lively pattern of astrological signs in your area rug.
Buy art because you love it and because it pretty much fits where you’d like to hang or display it, not because it matches. And whether or not the art stays in place if/when you decide to sell your home is an entirely different conversation we can have when it’s time to sell.
Unless, of course, it’s a Shemi.

Chicago International Film Festival
|
Welcome to North America’s longest-running competitive film festival. With more than 100 feature films and 60 shorts films from around the world, ranging from moving, life-affirming dramas to eye-opening documentaries to midnight shockers, this year’s festival will leave you with plenty talk about! The Chicago International Film Festival was started in 1964 by filmmaker and graphic artist Michael Kutza to provide an alternative to the commercial Hollywood movies that dominated the city’s theaters. Seeking out the best in international cinema, the Festival has opened windows to a world of film previously or otherwise unavailable in Chicago. In addition, at more than half of the screenings each year, filmgoers have the rare and exciting chance to meet directors, producers, writers and cast members who introduce their films and hold discussion sessions after the screenings.
