Although I truly appreciate all of our loyal Instagram followers (you know who you are!), I noticed a new follower who deserves a special shout-out: @stilletodance, a pole dancing studio on Chicago Avenue. Certainly, I’ve never pole-danced or even witnessed a pole dance in person.
But the addition of my new follower reminded me of one of my all-time favorite listings in my 30-year career: a single-family house with a pole dancing pole smack dab in the middle of the living room which the proud pole-dancer-seller refused to remove.
I can’t say we featured the pole as a hot selling point (although it would be a huge plus for the folks at stilletodance), but the house was a joy to show-and we sold it quickly, pointing out the home’s, er, versatility.
Because that is what we do for all of our listings: try to find the joy in a particular home and convey it enthusiastically.

The Factotum World Premier

Lyric Opera’s world premiere of the new soul opera The Factotum created by Will Liverman and DJ King Rico, presented at Chicago’s Harris Theater for five performances, February 3–12, 2023.
The Factotum was created by two longtime friends and collaborators, producer DJ King Rico and fast-rising and Grammy Award-nominated opera singer Will Liverman. They blended their vast musical experience to create an irresistibly upbeat work that celebrates the strength of community. The Factotum is loosely inspired by the popular opera The Barber of Seville, (the "Figaro! Figaro! Figaro!" opera everyone knows), the opera follows brothers Mike and Garby as they clash over the future of their family’s barbershop on Chicago’s South Side. The Factotum blends classical singing with diverse musical styles to create a soul opera, shifting from gospel and funk to rap and hip-hop to classic barbershop quartet and R&B. The result is a heartfelt comedy that redefines everything an opera can be. Powered by the voices of Chicago’s Black community and featuring a genre-bending score, Liverman and Rico’s work is a vision for a new kind of opera.

Design Film Festival

The Architecture and Design Film Fest is back in Chicago for the first time in six years this weekend. Stories of innovation and sustainability in architecture, design and fashion. Hosted by the Architecture and Design Film Fest in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Center, all showings will be at the award winning Chicago Architecture Center. The Short Film Program will be showing on a continuous loop in the Chicago Gallery and is free and open to everyone. An eclectic assortment of shorts, they demonstrate a wide range of narrative techniques, each depicting a singular design story in very different ways. The films range from as brief as 2 minutes to as long as 15 minutes. Stay for a few or enjoy the entire program.
