No matter how nice a restaurant server seems when they greet you at your table (“I’m Ashley and I’ll be taking care of you tonight”; “I’m Sebastian and I’ll be taking care of you tonight”; “I’m Olivia and I’ll be taking care of you tonight”; or “I’m Tiffany and I’ll be taking care of you tonight”), they will immediately earn my wrath if they proceed to tell me that they recommend sharing (about 8-10 dishes per person), what their favorites are (totally unsolicited) - or that chef likes you to order everything at once and will bring out the dishes when he feels like it (not when we want them).
Here’s my open message to Ashley, Sebastian, Olivia and Tiffany: um, nope.
I don’t care that you recommend sharing; what your favorite (unpublished “market priced”) dishes are; and chef’s inclination to push dishes out to the table at his whim, totally obliterating an enjoyable, leisurely-paced dining experience.
And don’t ask me if I’ve dined at your restaurant before. Even if I have yet to experience the unique, unprecedented, once-in-a-lifetime, historic experience your establishment offers, I have dined at restaurants before. Lots of them. And, after all of these years, I have a pretty good idea of how the whole operation works: we order; you prepare and serve; we eat; we talk about our travel plans and latest medical conditions; we pay; we leave.
If we each want our own appetizers, that's what we'll do. If we want to wait to order individual main courses until we’re all ready, then that’s what we’ll do. If we want more bread, you'll bring us some. Whether chef likes it or not. So there.
E
ven though I don’t (thankfully) operate a restaurant (no easy task, especially with customers like me), we deal with a lot of personalities - buyers and sellers with different goals, timing, agendas, and preferences. In contrast to so many agents who insist on pushing, directing, and over-managing, our team prides itself on listening to our clients and executing a customized plan of action consistent with their own needs and priorities. Not our own.
And that’s a unique, unprecedented, once-in-a-lifetime, historic experience you will welcome.
