So, I think we need to have an understanding about a certain word that’s used far too often, even with abandon by realtors. And that word is……(drum roll).... “unit.”
We come across many types of units on a day-to-day basis: air-conditioning units, franchising units (“the DQ on Southport is a good unit in contrast to the one in Darien”), units of measurement, a chapter taught in a second grade class (e.g., “pasting unit” or “science unit”), sometimes even a storage space.
But it should NEVER be used to describe a significant property listing.
Just yesterday I received a notice of a $9.5 million off-market listing with the following description: “This modern and completely custom unit features an open floor plan, 13' ceilings, and over 5,500 square feet of indoor living space.” (The bold is my own for emphasis).
With all due respect to this agent, you don’t sell a $9.5 million property as a "unit". You just don’t. It’s a residence. It’s an opportunity. It’s a sensation. It’s an urban estate. What it’s not is a "unit".
Maybe/perhaps/possibly a $150/month sublet for a room on a college campus can be described as a "unit". Maybe-perhaps-possibly.
But you would never (ever!) catch me calling anything more substantial than that a "unit", let alone a $9.5 million completely custom "unit" (sic) which features an open floor plan, 13’ ceilings, and over 5,500 square feet of indoor living space.
I see crafting the description of a listing as an opportunity to convey the essence of each property, not to sell it short. And my first rule is to avoid calling it a “unit.” There, I said it.

Check out the work of geniuses
|
Organized by the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago in collaboration with more than two dozen exhibition, programmatic, and research partner organizations across Chicago, Toward Common Cause: Art, Social Change, and the program of MacArthur Fellows ("Genius Grant" recipients) is an expansive, multi-venue exhibition taking place throughout 2021.
The exhibition explores the extent to which certain resources—air, land, water, and even culture—can be held in common. Raising questions about inclusion, exclusion, ownership, and rights of access, the exhibition considers art’s vital role in society as a call to vigilance, a way to bear witness, and a potential act of resistance. Presented on the 40th anniversary of the MacArthur Fellows Program, Toward Common Cause employs the Fellows Program as “intellectual commons” and features new and recontextualized work by 29 visual artists who have been named Fellows since the award program’s founding in 1981.

The Chicago Auto Show Returns
|
The Chicago Auto Show has received approval from state and city officials to host a special edition of the show July 15-19 at McCormick Place. The Chicago Auto Show will be one of McCormick Place's first live, in-person events since the pandemic shutdown.
The special edition show will move to the West Building of the McCormick Place complex and expand outdoors to take advantage of July weather. Attendees will now experience more outdoor test drive opportunities, test tracks and technology demonstrations, which will take place along Indiana Avenue and surrounding city streets. Auto show fans will be able to enjoy favorites like Camp Jeep and Ram Truck indoor test tracks as well as Subaru's popular pet adoption event. Ford has also embraced the show's outdoor space availability with experiences featuring the new Bronco, Bronco Sport and all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUV.
